After gaining bachelors and masters degrees in Natural Sciences (Psychology) at the University of Cambridge, I have worked in a range of NHS mental health services with patients experiencing the full range of psychological issues and psychiatric disorders.
Unlike many other therapists and NHS services, I do not believe that one type of therapy is the right fit for everyone. The evidence suggests that all therapies are roughly as effective and what is most important is a shared understanding of the approach that we are using, a commitment to working within the chosen model and an open and trusting relationship. I will help you to consider different therapeutic approaches and to choose a therapy that will be most effective for your problems.
When I visit a dentist, I don't want them to have a treatment plan in mind before they have seen me (e.g. an"extract problematic teeth" approach). I expect them to meet with me, assess the problems and create an individual treatment plan based on my needs. This is the approach that I take to mental health and psychotherapy.
I have spent more than 10 years in formal education, learning about various approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. I am qualified and experienced in offering CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Humanistic-Existential Counselling, Hypnotherapy/NLP and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy.
I have experience of working with children, adults and couples, focusing on depression, stress, anxiety and trauma as well as specialist experience working with long-term physical health conditions, weight management, addictions, chronic fatigue syndrome and eating disorders.
My current area of study is the psychology of motivation and decision-making and the role of compassion and meditation for personal well-being.
I believe that a deep exploration and understanding of your physical, psychological, social and spiritual self is vital to bring about lasting change. All of these aspects of the Self are equally important and it is necessary to create balance and overcome conflicts across these areas in order to maximise your innate ability to grow.
Sessions typically combine counselling, meditation, visualisation and education into a therapy for holistic well-being. I offer the opportunity for discovery, through a compassionate and empathic relationship, which will allow you to 'try out' a new way of living your life.
I believe that we all have the ability to overcome our problems but sometimes we need help to see through the fog and we need space to allow ourselves to find solutions.
